Casa Villaggio is a restored Tuscan farmhouse in the Mugello, just to the north of Florence in the foothills of the Italian Apennines. The property enjoys a picturesque position on the edge of a small hamlet that consists of a medieval church with bell tower, a Palladian villa, two old farmhouses and beautiful views. There is also an excellent restaurant and cafe within a few minutes walk of the property.
Part of Casa Villaggio is believed to date back to the 13th century, however the end restoration is a striking mix of old and new, with modern conveniences sensitively added into the original design. The kitchen is modern and newly fitted, whilst the reception and living rooms are comfortable and well appointed. There are about three quarters of an acre of enclosed gardens, set aside to lawn, olive trees, fig trees and a large 300 year old oak tree, affording shade in the summer months. There is a gazebo with outside seating and a south facing terrace which enjoys good countryside views and is an additional shaded area in which to relax and enjoy the ambience.
The surrounding area of the Mugello is where many Florentines come to escape the city at the weekends and to relax and enjoy local attractions such as Scarperia - an ancient hill top town, well known for its bespoke cutlery and embattlements particularly the Palazzo dei Vicari and other attractive towns and villages. The Mugello autodrome is also a short distance away for motoring enthusiasts!
The real pleasure however is a day trip into the city of Florence itself, about a 40 minute drive away. Alternatively one can opt for a bus (that leaves from the village, taking 1 hr) or train into the city (thus avoiding parking issues), the train from Borgo San Lorenzo taking just 35 minutes. Luco di Mugello (2 kms) has nearest groceries, pharmacy, post office, butchers and more. Five minutes further by car into Borgo San Lorenzo offers more supermarkets and shops.
